Healthy Office Tips You Can Actually Use

It’s not uncommon to come across articles circling the web about how to stay healthy while stuck in an office 8 hours a day.  A lot of these articles give a few good tips you may consider for your next gym session, but let’s be honest, who actually wants to be sneaking pushups or calf raises in the semi-privacy of their cubicle. But nevertheless, the one thing all those articles do have correct is the importance of keeping your health in mind throughout the workday.

Here are 7 ways to stay healthy in the workplace without receiving the ridicule from your coworkers on a daily basis.

Walk-and-Talk

You sit enough at your desk all day, so when it’s time to schedule a meeting, take it as an opportunity to get moving.  Strolling around with a colleague will allow you to wake up a little and can help get those ideas flowing.  Thanks to technology, it’s easy to take notes on the move with your smartphone.  If you need to make a phone call, pace around while you talk.  Sometimes that’s a good way to do your best thinking.

Less is More in Your Cubicle

Give yourself more reasons to get up and move.  Get rid of your cubicle’s trashcan, so you have to venture out to throw stuff away.  Only fill your water cup halfway, so it means more trips to the water cooler.  And most importantly don’t leave snacks easily accessible.  Make yourself work for those calories by storing them in the company kitchen or fridge.

Go the Extra Mile

Whether you’re thirsty or need a bathroom break, don’t head for the closest or most realistic location.  Make the walk a little longer by visiting the bathroom on another floor or choosing the water cooler that’s on the other side of the building. You never know who you’ll spark conversation with along the way, which will also help break up the day when you hit that afternoon slump.

“E-mail Free” Days

Pick certain days of the week where instead of responding to an email by hitting the reply button, go find the sender instead (granted it’s someone in your office) and deliver the message personally.  Socializing with colleagues is good for anyone’s mood and is just another reason to get out of your chair.  Making this a habit will help with office relationships and your health.

Work Together, Work Out Together

Who doesn’t love a little good competition?  Challenge fellow coworkers to a step-count competition by investing in small pedometers to wear throughout the day.  Winner gets a coffee.  It’s much easier to stay motivated when you’re not in it alone.

You are What You Eat

During your lunch break, find someone who you can share healthy eating habits and new recipes.  Being healthy isn’t just about getting moving, it’s about what you consume. Plan ahead by packing your lunch and when it’s nice out, eat outside.  Revive for the afternoon by getting some fresh air while you eat a nourishing lunch that won’t leave you feeling lethargic all afternoon.

Distractions Aren’t Always Bad

Just like your legs or eyes may tire throughout the day, your brain may too.  Maintaining your mental health is just as important as anything else.  Allow your self some causal breaks to surf the web or talk to someone.  That way when you do get back to work, you can be much more focused and probably a lot less bitter about your long to-do list.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Your Chair

Studies have consistently shown that the wrong office chair can be harmful to your health. Unlike traditional chairs, ergonomic chairs are specifically designed to work with body mechanics to prevent back and neck pain, eyestrain, leg pain, and movement disorders.  At the very least, eliminating some of these discomforts throughout the day help your body get a lot more out of the different activities you enjoy doing once you leave the office.
