Grace Low BackWhether the time you spend in your office chair on a daily basis is 10 hours or 2 hours, we can all agree that no one wants to be uncomfortable for any length of time.  However, there is a difference between finding a chair that provides comfort and one that actually protects and supports your body.  We may all want that comfy feeling, but it’s those of you sitting closer to 10 hours a day that these injury-preventing features really matter. You can find the a chair that meets these needs AND looks good.  So here’s how to choose the right office chair for you:

The Process

Research- Check out some of the different features that ergonomic office chairs can provide.  Knowing what is available is the first step to being able to choose what’s best for you.
Ask Questions– How will you be using your chair? How many hours a day will you be sitting in it? Do you need more mobility throughout the workday?  Do you have any special needs or injuries that your chair should support? Knowing these answers can help you narrow down those features.
Visit Showrooms– Take a trip to some local stores or dealers that have showrooms filled with chairs for you to try out.  No matter how much research you do, the best way to find your perfect fit may be to actually sit in some possible candidates.
Compare Prices– Shop around for some pricing that fits your budget.  See what type of range you are looking at for high-end office chairs and the different features they can provide.  If the numbers are a little scary, check out refurbished and pre-owned options, which could allow you to get the exact chair you wanted, but at a number that makes sense.
Think of Customization- Some of these chairs will allow the option for you to choose colors andmaterials.  Often, this is one of the biggest benefits to choosing a refurbished chair.  Get that stylish look your modern office deserves!

Knowing Adjustability

Seat Height:
-Seat height is a common feature that should be easy to adjust
-Feet should rest flat on the floor with thighs at a 90 degree angle for the best posture
-Range should include slightly above and below this ideal height to give you some flexibility
-Pneumatic seat height adjustment allows user to adjust the height while still seated for easier alterations

Seat Depth and Width:
Depth should have enough space to sit back comfortably without the back of the user’s knees touching the seat edge- try a couple fingers distance as a guideline
-Seat slide allows the user to achieve this depth based on their height
-Width should provide about an inch or so on either side for some wiggle room, but not too spacious to cause user to reach or lean for armrests

Seat-Back Recline:
Reclining allows body to relieve pressure off the lower back by supporting your upper body weight
-Natural glide recline changes the chairs position while user is seated based on posture
-Lock options available to hold the degree of the recline position that is most comfortable
-Back Tilt Tension allows the user to control how much force is necessary to recline the seat’s back

Armrests:
-At the very least, task chair arms should be height adjustable- lowest point being about thigh height
-Forearms should be parallel to the floor when hands are on the keyboard or mouse
-Proper armrest setting should allow arms to rest comfortably and shoulders relaxed
-Pivoting or swing back arms allow the user to completely move the armrests out of the way when not needed
-Armrest width is another adjustment options if necessary for wider or more narrow body types

Lumbar Support:
-Very important due to the increasing lower back ailments in employees
-Lower back should be situated comfortably against backrest, supporting the natural curve of the spine
-Provides proper support through firmness and position control
-This lumbar adjustment accommodates the natural inward curve of the spine to prevent slouching throughout the day

Mobility
-Swivel allows the chair seat to spin on a center base so the user can reach various places at their desk without standing
-Casters provide mobility for user to navigate the chair around the work area while in the seated position

Mesh ChairChair Materials

Seat materials shouldn’t be all about looks.  Comfort is key.  Some materials, such as mesh, allow optimal breathability to prevent discomfort throughout long periods of sitting.  The amount of cushioning is important too for additional support verses harder materials.  You obviously want a chair that looks good, but don’t sacrifice the right feel for a flashy style.  Try out some materials before you buy.
