Sending Kids to Camp, One Wing at a Time

What’s more exciting than watching three grown men devour 123 wings in 8 minutes? How about raising $9,700 in scholarships to send children to summer camp?  Well, this past weekend, a couple members of the EthoSource team (accompanied by a solid fan following) were able to do both!

The Easter Seals of Eastern PA held a fundraiser on Sunday, March 6th, which brought groups of participants and supporters from all over the area together to the California Bar N Grill for a Wing Eating Competition.   24 was the event’s lucky number as it marked the number of years the Easter Seals has hosted the competition AND was the number of 3-person teams that competed this weekend.  These teams all had the option of choosing between the medium, hot or (for the extremely daring) suicide wing categories.

In addition to being an event sponsor, contributing to the nearly $10,000 raised, EthoSource entered a team to take on the medium wings for the second year in a row, hoping to make a competitive run for the title.  First-timer, Mike Riley, joined veterans, George Zook and Jose Montes, representing three different departments at EthoSource: Sales, Delivery/Installation and Inventory, respectively.  Families, friends and coworkers all joined them at the event to support the cause and provide some positive encouragement through the sweat and tear-filled struggle that the Etho team was soon to endure.

The starting bell sounded, and they were off to the races!  It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but after 480 seconds of forceful wing eating, I think the guys can agree it was worth it (despite how they may have physically felt afterward).  When the wings were tallied, Team Etho posted some impressive numbers, finishing with 123 wings total.

Easter Seals Wing Eating CompetitionThis story has a bittersweet ending.  Despite the joy that came with finishing second place and receiving those hard-earned trophies, there was some slight disappointment in the fact that only one wing separated the guys from a 1st place finish! ONE WING.  However, the real win of the day was the money raised for the Easter Seal’s Camp Lily Program.  Between event sponsorships, donations and a raffle, the funds raised will send numerous children with disabilities to summer camp for six weeks to enjoy fun recreational activities.

EthoSource was proud to sponsor the event for the second year, and is already looking forward to next year’s event!  The training has already begun!
