Origins of the Cubicle
Back in 1964, the Herman Miller home furnishings company employed a man by the name of Robert Propst. He is credited with designing the first office cubicle. He studied how people worked and focused his design on improving the open office layout he was used to.
His first design was called the “Action Office.” It featured a very large desk, an area for making phone calls, a space for vertical files, and some added partitions to provide privacy. Interestingly enough, the desk could be set at a variety of heights because Propst believed that having the option to sit or stand while working might improve blood flow.
Unfortunately, when his design was unveiled in 1968, it was a flop. It had a futuristic look, but had too little support. People felt it was a concept that was too far-fetched, and the product itself was quite expensive for business owners at the time.
The Herman Miller team to return to the drawing board and create a less expensive design that became the hugely successful “Action Office 2” cubicle-based system. It was a flexible system that encouraged spontaneous conversation, idea sharing, etc. While Propst designed the system with compassion for workers, his design made it possible to cram a lot of employees into a relatively small footprint and provide everyone with a semi-private enclosure.
Now, more than 50 years later, what is now known as the Herman Miller Ethospace system is one of the nation’s top selling brands that is often referred to as the “Cadillac of office cubicles” and was the beginning of the cubicle office systems we enjoy today.
