Ergonomic seating includes office chairs designed to be used in a way that conforms to the needs of the users’ bodies, so they generally need to have adjustable features to suit the varied body types found within an office environment.

What to Look for in Ergonomic Seating

Width and Depth of the Seat

The seat of a chair should be broad and deep enough to sit comfortably while working. When seated, the user’s back should rest on the chair’s back piece with at least 2″ of space left between the front of the seat portion and the bend of the knees. To provide this fit, you may need to purchase a few different seats to accommodate your workers’ different body types.

Adjustability of Tilt and Height

The tilt of office seating needs to be adjustable, and so does the chair height. The ideal chair height allows the user to sit with their feet on the floor, thighs parallel to the floor, and arms at desk level. Some shorter employees, or those with existing back injuries, may require ergonomic footstools to remain comfortable.

Suppose you’ve sat in either too short or too tall furniture for your body. In that case, you can understand the difficulty users experience when forced to use poorly fitting furniture throughout the day while attempting to focus on tasks.

Adjustable Lumbar Support

Support for the lower back is another critical element of ergonomic seating. Lumbar support fits against the lower curve of the spine. Without this support, users will strain their backs, but achieving the right degree of support requires an adjustable lumbar support system built into the chair since body types differ drastically from one staff member to the next.

Backrest Seat Portion

Distinct from the lumbar support, a seat’s backrest must provide support for the entire back. Adjusting the seat’s backrest to find the perfect angle for comfort is essential in ergonomic furnishings.

Swivel Function

For office chairs, the ability to swivel should be a given. As workers turn from monitor to printer, filing cabinet, and back, swivel chairs allow them to do so without putting undue strain on the back.

Seat Composition

The materials that create seating affect the comfortability of the piece. Padding and breathability are essential; hard seats and sweaty textiles might look smooth and modern, but they don’t cater to long work days and sustained sitting.

Adjustable Armrests

The armrests of ergonomic chairs can be adjusted to fit the user. The elbows and lower arms should be supported but not lifted unnaturally when seated.
