The Myth of Multitasking

Distraction is everywhere – not only in today’s workplace, but in our lives in general. Economist and Psychologist Herbert A. Simon said it best; “a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention” (source). We are continually bombarded with information in our society, and access to new information is now available to us in countless ways. Communication is constantly right at our fingertips and is very hard to ignore. Everyone has so much going on in their lives so we struggle to focus, and we are not multitasking as we think we are. “Scientists have proven that when we think we’re multitasking, we’re really switching our attention rapidly between things” (source).17rhx3mevumo9jpg

Upon researching worker’s behaviors and the ever-evolving nature of work itself, cognitive researchers have found that workers can benefit from a carefully designed environment. Creativity, productiveness, and effectiveness of the worker can all be effected by the environment of the worker. Does this mean you should no longer sit next to your friendly coworker at work? No, because not all distractions are a result of your external environment. Just as many distractions come from within. Your internal feelings, ideas, thoughts, apprehensions, etc. will also distract you throughout your day (source).

Areas where we can focus, refresh, and activate can help us think better. Make each work day more effective by allowing your brain some time to recharge. Like many other things, our brains can burn out when worked too hard. So how can our work environment help with that?

For most people, focusing can only be done in a quiet, uninterrupted, non-distracting environment. Boundaries help workers focus, and control of our environment helps workers focus.
The level of privacy/boundary in each office is different, as it depends on the industry and the type of work they do. Here are different examples of levels of privacy in different office environments (source).

Every so often we need to take a break, grab a snack, or meet up with a friend to chat. Workers need a place to gather and relax.

Take a look at our cafe furniture to create a “refresh” environment for your employees.

Your brain needs help throughout the day to stay stimulated. After working several hours, your brain probably wants to shut off. To stay productive, reactivate your brain by moving around.

Treadmill desks, height adjustable desks, and workplace accessories can help get your brain thinking again.
