What Your Workspace May Say About You

Everyone works differently.  In fact, we’ve noticed that some people work in some pretty strange ways, but if whatever or wherever you call your workspace helps you be productive and creative, then who are we to judge?  Our job is just to help you find the right furniture to allow you work the way you want to.  Ultimately, there’s way too many unique work styles to capture them all, but we wanted to explore what some different workspaces may say about you and your work style, no matter how unique they may be.

Collaborative/Open Space– This office is increasingly popular in today’s workplace.  You like to feed off of others’ creativity and engage in open discussions and frequent communication.  Interacting with coworkers is what sparks your best ideas and keeps you productive throughout the workday. You aren’t easily distracted by noisy coworkers or side conversations and usually your daily responsibilities don’t require a lot of concentration or silence anyway.

Touchdown Workspace– You don’t really use your workspace that much because you prefer being on-the-go most of the time. You do your best thinking in constantly changing surroundings and are inspired by new people and places every day.  If it’s not by choice, and you’re just constantly all over the place because you have to be, then take a minute to slow down from time to time and take advantage of the perks of your ever-changing work environment.

Clean and Simple– You enjoy the sense of clarity and “blank slate” mentality that comes from a very organized workspace.  Your desk is fresh and simple to eliminate distractions and give you the portability that may be necessary as new opportunities or impromptu meetings arise.

Warm and Fussy–  Your workspace looks a lot like a cool living room.  You may have a soft carpet, comfy lounge chairs, co-working tables or no tables at all.  This atmosphere helps you feel relaxed and get others around you to relax as well.  The mood is very casual and pressure-free, which is when your best work really comes out.

Standing Desk– You may just like knowing that you’re being healthier than the sitting alternative, but you may also like the flexibility and convenience of the standing position.  It enables you to move and wander freely with ease, while also making you seem much more approachable to coworkers and employees, which you enjoy as well.

Integrated Meeting Space– You have a desk and you use it, but close by you have that ever-useful meeting table that helps you step away from your computer screen and get out of your seat without going too far.  You like to switch things up ever so slightly, but stay connected to your work area and maintain that sense of privacy in your office.  You also don’t hate the added bonus of a perfect impromptu meeting area in close proximity because although you enjoy your alone time, you’re also not trying to give off the impression that you don’t ever want to see anyone.  You’ve got a good balance going here.

Office with a View–  Lucky for you, your office is located somewhere that you have some pretty nice visuals right outside. So you’ve set up your space to take full advantage of the view because you like imagining a world of possibilities within your grasp.  Whether it’s inspiring or helps you keep an open mind, your favorite part of a good brainstorm is gazing off into the horizon to clear your head and spark new ideas.

The Private Office – This workspace could explain a couple different work styles. To start, you may enjoy a distraction free work area and you get the most done when you’re alone and able to concentrate.  On the other side of things, you may do a lot of work electronically, whether you’re a knowledge worker constantly on the computer or a sales or executive rep who’s always in communication with clients and coworkers.  This requires a certain degree of separation from others in the office, for both your sakes.

The Colorful Workspace–  Surrounding yourself with bright colors puts you in a good mood!  Who can feel uninspired and depressed in a room that resembles a rainbow!?  It is proven that some colors just help improve your mood and productivity, and you work best when you’re channeling your inner child and using your imagination.

The Unassigned Workspace–  You’re a floater. You prefer to be next to someone new each day and don’t require a lot of space or personal belongings to get your job done.  Whether you’re interacting with others or keeping to yourself, you like the element surprise, not knowing what your workspace will look like each day and who you’ll be sharing it with.

treadmill-deskTreadmill Desk–  You’re a health nut! Just kidding.  Even your average joe may choose this workspace because they like to keep moving.  Maybe the thought of sitting still all day drives you crazy or you keep getting distracted fidgeting in a chair every hour. You like the treadmill desk because it gets you moving both physically and mentally.  You feel good about yourself while you work and all the creative juices start flowing as you walk. Your brain needs some exercise too!

The Personal Shrine – Your walls are filled with certificates, photos and other personal achievement moments that continue to motivate you.  Hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little competitiveness, even with yourself.  You set personal career goals and get after them simply by reminding yourself of your abilities.  You push yourself to be better than before, and it gives you confidence to do your best work and encourage others to do the same.

If you don’t fall into any of these categories, or even if you do, we’d love to hear how you work!  Tell us what your workspace is like and how it works for you!
