New or Used: What Every Cubicle Needs

Whether you’re in the market for new or used cubicles, there are a couple of must-haves that you need to consider when designing your layout.  With so many new, innovative styles and features, it’s easy to incorporate helpful tools and techniques to promote a healthier and happier workspace.  Here’s what you need to be thinking about for your new cubicles:

Balance

Your cubicle shouldn’t shut you off from the rest of the office. Privacy may be important to you and your work style, but complete isolation in the long run will not help your productivity or your health.  It also makes it more of an effort to collaborate with coworkers when the situation arises.  There are multiple ways to create a workspace that keeps you connected to your surroundings and employees without interfering with your individual focus, and different degrees of achieving this.  Whether it be glass tiles for natural light or lower height tiles to keep visuals throughout the office, your design is very important to helping or hindering your work.

Connectivity

In today’s workplace, it’s more vital than ever to be connected to coworkers and customers outside the office and across multiple platforms.  Technology has bridged this gap and manufacturers have been incorporating it into newer office furniture more and more as a standard feature.  Your workstation should enable you to communicate and connect to people no matter where they are, and that can be done with technology through the use of electrical outlets, wire management and other power components. Don’t fall behind by losing touch with a clients and customers that are constantly on the move!

Privacy

Even in the midst of the open office crave, it’s still important that offices include some degree of privacy.  Even in some of the most collaborative positions, the ability for some personal space not only helps eliminate noise and distractions, but also protects your work and personal information.  It’s natural for people to want some personal time, and for many, this is when/where they can reflect on the day’s collaborations and foster this knowledge.  Like previously mentioned, it’s important to have a balance between collaboration and privacy, so whether it’s just a partition or a 70″ wall on one side of your cubicle, incorporate the amount of privacy that helps you best be productive.

Storage

Another reason personal space is important is the need for organization.  Despite how technologically continues to advance, we still have the use for papers, folders, notes, etc., in addition to safe keeping of personal belongings and valuables.  Having the proper storage solutions means less time searching and scrambling and more time getting work done.  Depending on your office design, the various styles of filing cabinets can assist you in the specific ways you need.  If your work space requires more flexibility, mobile pedestals are a great option for a versatile storage solution.

Flexibility/Mobility

It’s inevitable that all companies go through changes.  From growing to downsizing to redesigning, it’s much more valuable to you and your employees to invest in workspaces that can be modified to adjust to these needs in the most efficient and timely way possible.  Having cubicles that can be moved and reconfigured easily will benefit you in the long run, as well as accommodate each user’s specific needs.  These days, more and more office furniture is being put on wheels or made compactible for easy storage.  It’s a big plus to have furniture that is also flexible to accommodate a variety of work styles and employees  that may have to use the space.

Accessories

There are endless possibilities for accessories that would support collaboration, organization, training and other necessary uses for your workstation.  From whiteboards, tack boards, paper management, shelves, storage and more, your cubicle should be able to incorporate these helpful elements without cluttering your space.    In cubicle systems such as Herman Miller Ethospace, these accessories can pop in and out of the cubicle walls easily and make your station a more dynamic work space.

Color

For how many of hours a day you may spend in a workstation or office, you owe it to yourself to have a fun, bright surrounding that helps enhance your mood and spark creativity.  Certain colors are shown to evoke different emotions, for example, green, which stimulates a sense of balance and calm, or yellow, which exudes a feeling of confidence and optimism. Don’t spend your workday surrounded by dull, depressing office walls.  It’s not beneficial to you or your work.

The latest monitor arms, LED lights, office chairs, etc. are being designed with modern, minimalist looks that means they take up little space and look sleek, while still helping you significantly.  Lights are now extremely energy efficient, monitor arms support full sit to stand ranges of motion and chairs are loaded with adjustments and comfort features.  All of these tools were designed with the purpose of providing a healthier, more productive workspace.
