Ideas for the Best Office Halloween

Happy Halloween Eve! The simple fact that Halloween is on a Friday this year pretty much leaves no excuse to not get into the holiday spirit.  Those of you working a 9-5 tomorrow may think this Halloween excitement doesn’t apply to you, but you’re actually the lucky ones surrounded by fellow spirited coworkers for an entire day! You may have nothing planned as of yet, and yes, your time is ticking (less than 24 hours!), but we have a few tips and treats (get it) to help you save Halloween for your whole office! So listen up to these ideas for the best office Halloween ever…

Costumes:

I love a good costume as much as the next person, but there’s no need to get crazy.  The best office costumes are the ones that combine comfort (and appropriateness) with wit and humor.  That sounds hard… but it’s not! (you do only have one night to do this though, so let’s stay realistic).  The way to go may be dressing up as your boss or even a competitor to make fun.  You can also pretty much find a printable celebrity or politician mask just about anywhere online for a really easy solution.  Those could be fun.  Or it may help to get a group costume idea going, so that way you can rest assured others will be dressed up as well.  A few easy ideas are a couple players from your favorite sports team, colorful M&M’s or a box of crayons, a zoo full of animals, super heroes, or a bunch of zombies.  Those are all great suggestions (if I do say so myself), so you have no excuse to not dress up.  If you’re flying solo or in a smaller group, check out some of these very clever, mildly difficult costumes to be the hit of Halloween.

Halloween-office-partyFestivities:

It may be a little late (or a little much) to plan pumpkin carving or apple bobbing, but this does not mean your office Halloween is a lost cause! First off, as long as there’s candy, you’re good.  For kids and adults alike, candy is a MUST (no if, ands, or buts).  That is unless you want everyone to dislike you.  But chances are if you’re a fun office like us, you have candy and treats available on a regular basis throughout the year anyway, so one way to spice it up is to have office trick-or-treating! Encourage as many employees as possible (everyone should be willing, unless like I said, they want to be disliked) and have everyone keep the contribution at their desks in either a bag or basket.  Then throughout the day, employees can visit each others workspaces and collect different treats like a genuine trick-or-treating experience.  You’re never too old, and this is great for company culture.  Check out the best and worst Halloween candies according to Thrillist.

Another great way to celebrate is surprise the office with a Halloween breakfast.  Stop by Dunkin or the grocery store for some fresh, decorative donuts, apple cider and maybe some pumpkin cookies or other delicious seasonal treats. Everyone can chip in, but you’ll still be the office favorite for bringing it through the door.

Who doesn’t love a little competition?  Try out one of these simple games to stir up some office camaraderie .

  • Fill a jar with candy corn and have coworkers guess how many are in there.
  • Best costume award! Someone’s gotta win.
  • Put together a couple holiday-themed, pop-culture questions for Halloween trivia
  • A big game of Halloween pictionary is sure to get some laughs as employees show off their terrible drawing skills

Decorations:

At this point, it’s a little difficult to make your office into a haunted house, but not too late to grab a few pumpkins or gourds that can double as Thanksgiving decorations eventually too, so they’re totally worth it.  You can also utilize orange and black balloons to fill the office floor (the orange ones look like pumpkins… kinda).  Throw on a Halloween themed playlist, and you’re golden!  Candy, pumpkins, and the Monster Mash… you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great Halloween.

If none of this sparks any interest to you, just throw on some orange and black before you leave the house in the morning, so you can get some participation points (a couple whiskers, and wah lah, you’re a cat.. come on people, it’s not hard!). You’ll coworkers will appreciate the effort!

Happy Halloween!
